What Do Children Carry Out of Family Court?

HOST 1

Welcome to The Shoes Left Behind—a place where we talk about something that often gets lost in custody battles, high-conflict divorce, and family court: The children.

HOST 2

Because when the hearings end, the attorneys go home, and the paperwork gets filed away, children are still living with what happened. And sometimes, what they carry with them lasts much longer than the court case itself.

HOST 1

That’s the meaning behind The Shoes Left Behind. Picture two pairs of shoes outside a courtroom. One pair belongs to an adult. The other belongs to a child. The adults may be arguing about custody, parenting time, allegations, money, or who is right and who is wrong. But the child standing in those smaller shoes may be asking completely different questions: Am I safe? Do I have to choose? Is it okay to love both of my parents? Does anybody care what this is doing to me?

HOST 2

And that’s where this conversation needs to change. Supporting children does not require automatically taking the mother’s side. It does not require automatically taking the father’s side. It requires being willing to look beyond the conflict and ask: What is happening to the child?

HOST 1

At The Shoes Left Behind, we want to talk about those questions. We’ll talk about family court, coercive control, high-conflict parenting, documentation, reunification, accountability, and the emotional impact prolonged conflict can have on children and families. But we’ll also talk about something else: Hope. Because awareness can lead to change.

HOST 2

So whether you’re a parent, grandparent, professional, advocate—or someone who simply believes children deserve a voice—there’s a place for you in this conversation.

HOST 1

Because every child leaves family court carrying something. The question is whether we’re willing to notice what was left behind.

HOST 2

This is The Shoes Left Behind. And this is only the beginning.
